What Size Dumpster Do I Need?
Almost everybody asks this as a volume question. It is really two questions — how much space your debris takes up, and how much it weighs. Get the second one wrong and the first one stops mattering. Here is how to work out both, with the real numbers for all six of our containers.
It’s two questions, not one
Every container has a volume capacity and a weight limit, and they run out independently.
A 6 yard filled with sofas, boxes and clothing will run out of space long before it troubles the weight limit. The same container filled with broken tile and plaster will hit the weight limit while it still looks half empty. Same box, two completely different outcomes.
An overweight container is not a billing problem, it is a physical one: we cannot legally lift it, so it has to be lightened on site before it moves. That costs you a day. Which is why it is worth two minutes of estimating up front.

Estimating volume without a tape measure
Cubic yards mean nothing to most people, so use something you can picture:
- A 33-gallon trash bag is about a sixth of a cubic yard — so roughly six bags per yard.
- A full-size pickup bed heaped is about two cubic yards.
- A standard sofa occupies somewhere between one and two cubic yards once it is in the container and not compressed.
- A single-car garage cleared of ordinary clutter typically produces three to six cubic yards.
The mistake almost everyone makes: forgetting that furniture, boxes and mattresses do not compress. You estimate from the pile you can see and it takes up half again as much room once it is loaded. Break down what you can — flatten boxes, dismantle furniture, cut long timber — and you will genuinely get more into the same container.
Estimating weight — the part that catches people
This is where jobs go wrong, because density varies enormously.

Roofing is the other one worth checking. A single-layer asphalt tear-off of around twenty squares will sit near the 25 yard’s three-ton limit. Architectural shingles are heavier than three-tab, and a second layer doubles everything. Size by size — including who shouldn’t get it
3 Yard — 6 × 4 × 4 ft, 750 lbs
Right for: a single-car garage clear, one room of clutter, a small furniture disposal job, or a tight driveway where nothing bigger fits.
Not right for: anything structural. 750 lbs goes faster than it sounds — a handful of dense items and you are there.
4 Yard — 6 × 4.5 × 5 ft, 900 lbs
Right for: a kitchen or bathroom refresh, apartment clearance, or a small renovation where the debris is cabinetry and fittings rather than walls.
Not right for: tile or plaster removal. Both hit 900 lbs quickly.
6 Yard — 6 × 6 × 6 ft, 1,000 lbs
Right for: the busiest household size. Medium home cleanouts, yard and green waste, a two-bedroom clearance, a move-out declutter.
Not right for: a whole property. If you are clearing a full house, this becomes three swap-outs and the 25 is simpler.
10 Yard — 16 × 8 × 2 ft, 2 tons
The specialist. Long, wide and deliberately shallow — built for dirt, concrete, brick, asphalt and excavation spoil. Most residential-focused companies in Los Angeles do not stock one.
Right for: driveway and patio demolition, hardscape removal, trenching spoil, any load where weight is the constraint.
Not right for: household junk. You will run out of volume with tons of allowance unused. Use a household size instead.
25 Yard — 20 × 8 × 4 ft, 3 tons
Right for: whole-house cleanouts, estate clearances, roofing tear-offs, commercial junk removal and property turnovers.
Not right for: a narrow frontage. At twenty feet long it needs a real driveway or a permitted street spot — see the permit guide.
40 Yard — 20 × 8 × 6 ft, 4 tons
Right for: demolition, gut renovations, major construction, large commercial fit-outs.
Not right for: heavy fill, despite the size. Four tons of concrete fills very little of a 40 yard — that job belongs in the 10.
The honest bit: there’s a jump between 6 and 25
Our range is not a smooth ladder, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. The 3, 4 and 6 yard are household bins that fit a normal driveway. The 25 and 40 are full roll-offs. There is nothing in between.
So if a 6 is clearly too small and a 25 feels like overkill, you have two real options:
- Take the 6 and swap it out. Fill it, call us, we bring an empty one and take the full one in the same visit. Good when access is tight or you are working through a property room by room.
- Take the 25 anyway. Usually simpler if the driveway takes it. One delivery, one collection, no interruption.
Which is better depends on your frontage and your timeline more than your volume. That is a thirty-second phone call, and we will tell you straight rather than pushing you up a size.
Will it actually fit?
Capacity is one thing; getting the container into position is another. The 25 and 40 yard are both twenty feet long, and the truck needs considerably more room than that — it backs in and rolls the container off behind itself.
- Straight-line space well beyond the length of the bin, not just a parking spot.
- Clear overhead. Low branches, carport roofs and power lines are the usual blockers.
- Firm, level ground. A loaded container does not belong on a slope.
- Street placement means a permit in most of Los Angeles County — the permit guide covers city versus unincorporated.

Sizing questions we get asked
Why don’t you offer a 15 or 20 yard container?
Because our range is built around two different jobs rather than a smooth ladder. The 3, 4 and 6 yard are household bins that fit a normal driveway. The 25 and 40 yard are full roll-offs for whole properties and construction. How many pickup truck loads does each size hold?
A full-size pickup bed holds roughly two cubic yards heaped, so as a rough guide: a 3 yard is about a load and a half, a 6 yard is around three, a 25 yard is somewhere between ten and twelve, and a 40 yard is closer to twenty. Bed sizes vary, so treat these as ballpark rather than gospel.
Does a bigger container always cost more?
Not automatically, and not in the way people assume. Size, weight allowance, debris type, duration and location all feed into a quote — our guide to what drives cost walks through the factors. What does reliably cost more is getting it wrong and needing a second delivery.
Can I switch to a bigger container after delivery?
We can bring a different size, but it means a collection and a fresh delivery rather than a simple exchange. Far better to talk it through before the first truck rolls. If you are genuinely unsure, describe the rooms on the phone — that conversation takes about a minute.
What size for a two-bedroom apartment versus a four-bedroom house?
A two-bedroom apartment clearance usually lands on a 6 yard, sometimes a 4 if the furniture is already gone. A four-bedroom house with garage and yard is normally a 25 yard. The variable is not the bedroom count, it is how much has accumulated in the garage, attic and side yard.
Is the weight limit per day or for the whole rental?
For the whole rental. It is the total the container can hold when we come to collect it, not a daily allowance. Every rental runs seven days with drop-off and pick-up included, and the limit applies to the load as it sits on collection day.
Do the dimensions include the space the truck needs?
No — those are the container dimensions only. The truck needs considerably more room to back in and roll the container off behind it, plus clear space overhead. That is the single most common cause of a failed delivery. See our placement notes or just describe your frontage when you call.
My job has both heavy rubble and light household junk. What then?
Two containers, almost always. Heavy fill needs the shallow 10 yard and a different disposal route; everything else goes in a household or construction size. Mixing them means hitting the weight limit with the bin half empty. Describe the split on the phone and we will size both.
