How Much Does Dumpster Rental Cost in California?

California Cost Guide

How Much Does Dumpster Rental Cost in California?

Short answer: nobody can tell you honestly without knowing six things about your job. Long answer below — what actually drives the number, what is included, and how to describe your project so the first quote you get is the right one.

Where we operate. Clean-Up Cali is a family-owned hauler based in Porter Ranch, serving 40 cities across Los Angeles County. Costs elsewhere in California work the same way — the factors below apply statewide — but the quote we can give you is for LA County.

Every quote covers delivery, pick-up and the full seven-day rental.

How dumpster rental pricing actually works

We do not publish a price list, and it is worth explaining why rather than leaving you to assume the worst.

A single figure on this page would be wrong for most of the people reading it. Two jobs with the same container can differ by a wide margin depending on what goes in, how heavy it is, where it sits and how long it stays. Companies that advertise one headline number generally add the rest at the weighbridge — which means the figure that got your attention was never the figure you paid.

So instead: here are the six things that move the number, explained properly, so you can work out roughly where your job sits before you call. Then call +1 (818) 600-7320 and we will give you a real number that does not change afterwards.

The six factors that move your quote

1. Container size

The obvious one, and the least interesting. Bigger containers cost more, but the jump is not proportional — and undersizing costs more than oversizing once you factor in a second delivery. Our size guide works through the choice.

2. Weight of the load

The factor people underestimate most. Every container has a weight limit, and it is set by what a truck can legally carry rather than by us. Household junk and furniture are light for their volume; dirt, concrete, tile and plaster are extremely heavy. A load that hits the limit changes what happens next, so we ask about material before quoting.

3. Debris type

Type determines weight, and it also determines where a load can go. Heavy fill needs the shallow 10 yard and a different disposal route than mixed household waste. Clean single-material loads — all lumber, all metal, all concrete — handle differently from mixed ones.

4. How long you keep it

Every rental includes seven days with drop-off and pick-up. Longer than that is arranged by phone. If your timeline is genuinely uncertain, say so when you book — it is easier to plan for than to fix later.

5. Where it goes

Distance from our Porter Ranch yard matters, and so does access. A straightforward driveway drop in Granada Hills is a different job from a tight hillside street in Topanga needing a permitted kerbside spot.

6. Permits

Only relevant for street placement, and the fee is set by the issuing agency, not by us. Rules differ between the City of Los Angeles, unincorporated county areas, and the 20 independent cities we serve — the permit guide sorts out which applies to your address.

How to get an accurate quote first time. Tell us four things: what you are clearing or tearing out, roughly how much of it there is, where the container will sit, and when you need it. That is enough for a number we will stand behind.

The six sizes we actually run

Worth being precise about this, because a lot of cost comparisons you will read online reference sizes we do not carry.

SizeDimensionsWeight limitBuilt for
3 Yard6 × 4 × 4 ft 750 lbsSingle room, garage clear, tight driveways
4 Yard6 × 4.5 × 5 ft 900 lbsKitchen or bath refresh, apartment clearance
6 Yard6 × 6 × 6 ft 1,000 lbsMedium home cleanouts, yard waste
10 Yard16 × 8 × 2 ft 2 tonsDirt, concrete, brick, asphalt — heavy fill only
25 Yard20 × 8 × 4 ft 3 tonsWhole properties, roofing tear-offs
40 Yard20 × 8 × 6 ft 4 tonsDemolition, major construction

There is no 15, 20 or 30 yard in our fleet. If a 6 is too small and a 25 feels like too much, the usual answer is a 6 with a swap-out mid-job — the size guide explains the trade-off.

What every quote includes

  • Delivery to the spot you choose, on the date agreed.
  • The full seven-day rental. Not three, not five — seven, every time.
  • Pick-up when you call to say you are done.
  • Disposal at a permitted site.

What can change it: going over the weight limit, keeping the container beyond the seven days, or prohibited items in the load. All three we explain up front. None of them are a surprise if you tell us what is going in.

No hidden fees, stated plainly. There is no charge that only appears after the job. If something would change your quote, you hear about it before you book — see our quotes FAQ.

Permits and placement

  • Driveway or private property: generally no permit. Ask us to lay boards if you are worried about pavers or fresh asphalt.
  • Public street or sidewalk: a permit is usually required, and which agency issues it depends on your address. City of Los Angeles neighborhoods go through StreetsLA; unincorporated areas go through LA County Public Works; the independent cities each run their own process.
  • HOA: separate from any city process. Ask them what is permitted rather than whether anything is.
  • Safety, everywhere: clear of hydrants, fire lanes and driveways, level ground, and loaded no higher than the rim.

Full detail, including which of our 40 cities falls into which category, is in the Los Angeles dumpster permit guide.

How the rental works

  1. Call or send the details. Tell us the job, the volume, the location and the date. We recommend a size and quote it.
  2. We deliver. Same-day is often possible if you call before noon; next-day is almost always available. Mark the spot and clear anything overhead.
  3. You load. Level with the rim, weight spread across the floor, nothing prohibited. Take the full seven days if you need them.
  4. We collect. Call when you are done and we haul it to a permitted disposal site.

Depending on the load, that site is either a landfill or a third-party transfer and sorting facility. To be straight with you — we run trucks and containers, not a sorting line. What happens to material after we deliver it is the facility’s operation. More on where waste actually goes.

Five ways to spend less

  • Get the size right. Too small means a second delivery; too big means capacity you paid for and did not use. This is the big one.
  • Keep heavy fill separate. Do not mix rubble into a household load — you will hit the weight limit with the container half empty. Two right-sized containers beat one overweight one.
  • Break everything down. Flatten boxes, dismantle furniture, cut long timber. Air is what fills a container.
  • Stage before delivery. Pile everything where the container will go, then load in one push. You finish inside the seven days instead of paying for an extension.
  • Keep prohibited items out. A refused load costs a return trip. The prohibited items guide lists the free drop-offs.

One more that genuinely works on a residential street: if a neighbor is clearing out at the same time, a shared larger container often beats two small ones.

Cost questions we get asked

How much does dumpster rental cost in California?

There is no single figure that would be true for most people asking. A 6 yard of household junk in Northridge and a 40 yard of demolition debris in Pasadena are not comparable jobs. Cost is driven by size, weight, debris type, rental length, placement and permits. Call +1 (818) 600-7320 with the details and you will get a real number for your job rather than a range you have to hope applies.

Why don’t you publish a price list?

Because a headline figure on a page would be wrong for most readers, and the companies that advertise one usually add the rest at the scale. We would rather give you a number on the phone that does not change afterwards. It takes about a minute.

What is actually included in a quote?

Delivery, pick-up and the full seven-day rental. That is the standard on every container we run. What can change it — going over the weight limit, keeping the container longer, prohibited items in the load — we explain before you book, not after.

Which size dumpsters do you actually have?

Six: 3, 4 and 6 yard household containers, the 10 yard for dirt and concrete, the 25 yard for large-volume trash, and the 40 yard for construction debris. There is no 15, 20 or 30 yard in our fleet — our size guide explains how to pick between what we do have.

What materials are allowed and prohibited?

Allowed: household junk, furniture, lumber, drywall, yard waste, roofing debris, and dirt or concrete in the 10 yard. Prohibited under California law: paint and solvents, automotive fluids, batteries, tires, electronics, refrigerant appliances, asbestos, and liquids of any kind. Our guide to what can go in a dumpster lists the free drop-off options for everything on that second list.

How long can I keep the container?

Seven days as standard, with drop-off and pick-up included. Extensions are arranged over the phone — call before the week is out. If you fill it early we will swap in an empty one so the job keeps moving.

Are permits required, and do they cost extra?

A container on your own driveway generally needs no permit. On a public street most jurisdictions require one, and the fee is set by the issuing agency rather than by us. Our permit guide covers the difference between the City of Los Angeles, unincorporated county areas, and the independent cities.

What happens if I exceed the weight limit?

An overweight container cannot legally be lifted, so it has to be lightened on site before it can be hauled. That costs you a day. If you think you are close, call before pick-up — a swap-out is far easier than unloading by hand. More in our weight limits FAQ.

Tell us about the job

What you are clearing, roughly how much, where it goes and when. That is all we need for a quote that does not move afterwards — usually inside a minute on the phone.

Container dimensions, weight limits and the seven-day rental period are exact. Cost factors described above are general guidance, not a quote. Permit fees are set by the issuing agency. Accepted materials are governed by state and local regulation and by the receiving facility — confirm current requirements with CalRecycle or with us before relying on this page.
